The Long Winter Nap is Over

“Hey there, it’s time to wake up. Come on sleepy head the alarm is going off. It’s time to go back to work. No really you have to wake up!”

Those words aren’t meant for you, your children, or your spouse. They are meant for your swamp cooler. It’s time to call Climate Control Company so we can wake up your evaporative cooler in Aspen from its long winter’s nap.

Spring means summer is coming, and before you know it the hot weather will be here. Swamp coolers require a specific startup procedure in order to work efficiently. The easiest way to make sure it’s done correctly is to schedule an appointment with one of our trained technicians. Here are just a few of the services we will perform to get your evaporative cooler in Vail up and running:

  • Remove all side panels – This allows the technician to clean the inside. He or she may use a shop vac to remove any loose dirt or debris. If there are mineral deposits, the cooler can be cleaned with a descaling solution.
  • Connect water line – The technician will carefully connect the water supply line and tighten the fittings. After confirming the drain plug is in place in the water pan, he will turn the water on.
  • Check for leaks – Once the water is on, it’s important to check for leaks either in the fittings or around the drain plug. It’s imperative to make sure the float valve is working correctly. It will shut off the water when the pan is full.
  • Turn on the cooler – With the cooler running, it’s time to check the motor and pump to make sure both are working correctly. The technician will also examine the drive belt on the motor to make sure it’s not worn and is adjusted correctly.

I know it sounds complicated (a good reason to call in our professionals), but it may be easier to wake up your swamp cooler than it is to wake the kids up for these last few weeks of school.

As effective and economical as swamp coolers are, they do have some limitations. On the hottest summer days, or those rare days when we have high humidity, an evaporative cooler may not be able to keep your home comfortable. Many homeowners will combine it with some form of supplemental air conditioning. A great choice is adding ductless mini split heat pumps. They can cool key areas of the home when the evaporative cooler can no longer keep up.

Whatever your heating and air conditioning needs are in Aspen or anywhere on the Western Slope, your first and only call should be to Climate Control Company. Comfort driven, Colorado style.
