Many people in Glenwood Springs, Aspen, or Vail, CO, and across the entire Western Slope have discovered the advantages of ductless mini split air conditioners. In many situations they are an efficient and cost-effective cooling alternative to traditional central air. An important part of AC service is some tender loving care by you.
Mini Split Tips
Climate Control Company has put together a list of five homeowner maintenance tips for ductless air conditioners to keep your mini split functioning properly.
Cleanliness is Extremely Important
This is one of the easiest things you can do to maintain your system. When dust and dirt are allowed to collect it can easily lead to major issues. Just include the indoor air handler (usually mounted on the wall) in your weekly dusting routine. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the exterior. Check the vents to make sure they are free from dirt and dust.
Space is important
Your ductless air conditioner needs room. The mini split unit needs plenty of unobstructed wall space to promote good airflow. Do not put things like bookcases, paintings, or large pieces of artwork next to the air handler.
Clean or Replace Filters
One thing mini splits have in common with central air conditioners is that filter care is a critical part of AC service to maintain efficiency. Some filters can be replaced while others are removed and cleaned. Check the owner’s manual to find out the correct process and how often it should be done. Typically filter maintenance should be performed every 4-6 weeks for best results.
Clean Condenser Coil
Check the outdoor unit(s) regularly. There needs to be unrestricted airflow around the compressor unit. This means keeping weeds, plants, and landscaping trimmed. Use a garden hose WITHOUT a high-pressure nozzle to rinse off dirt and debris.
Carefully Remove Snow & Ice
Because mini splits use heat pump technology, they can also be used to provide heating during the winter. If snow and ice accumulate on the outdoor compressor the unit may not function properly. Check regularly and gently remove any accumulation from the unit.
