Should I Turn Off My Swamp Cooler When I’m Out?

swamp cooler

People choose to live on the Western Slope for many reasons. One of the most important is the dry mountain air which makes the summer heat much more comfortable. It also means many Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and Vail, CO homes and businesses can use a swamp cooler rather than an air conditioner. The result is a huge saving in utility bills.

SHOULD I SHUT MY COOLER DOWN?

Sometimes our clients ask if they should shut down their evaporative coolers when they leave? It’s not something Climate Control Company recommends unless you are planning on being away for an extended period. Without the swamp cooler running during the day while you’re gone, your home will quickly get very warm. Because of the nature of evaporative cooling, it will take a long time to bring the temperature back down to a comfortable level when you return in the evening.

A LITTLE TLC GOES A LONG WAY

Hopefully, you called Climate Control in the spring to get your swamp cooler ready for the summer, but that doesn’t mean your evaporative cooler won’t benefit from a little tender loving care during the rest of the year. Here is a handy checklist of things to do during the cooling season to assure efficient operation:

  • Assure proper operation of the float valve by checking the water level in the bottom tray. Ideally it should be about one inch below the top of the tray. If it’s too high or low, adjust the arm on the float valve.
  • If adjusting the float arm doesn’t restore the proper water level, you should consider installing a new float valve. You may want to call in professional help for this repair.
  • Inspect the other moving parts including the pump, motor, and fan belt.
  • Clean the cooler pads as needed. An accumulation of mineral deposits will reduce the efficiency of the swamp cooler.

DON’T FORGET TO SCHEDULE YOUR SHUTDOWN

Soon it will be time to say goodbye to the summer heat and turn our attention to the coming cold weather. Before you do that make sure to call Climate Control Company to make an appointment for one of our technicians to handle your swamp cooler shutdown. Having it done professionally will assure the evaporative cooler is protected from the winter snow and ice and will be ready to go when spring once again arrives in Glenwood Springs, Aspen, and Vail, CO.
