Did you know that the air you breathe inside is more polluted than what you breathe outdoors? Your indoor air contains moisture, odors, allergens and other pollutants that build up over time. You can improve your indoor-air quality by installing certain HVAC upgrades. Here are four of the top upgrades you can make to your HVAC system:
- Whole-house ventilation: Fresh air is essential for improving air quality. Newer homes have been constructed to be weathertight. This reduces the loss of heat in the summer and cool in the winter. It can also trap pollutants. A mechanical ventilation system can bring fresh air into the house without compromising the heating and cooling envelope. This reduces pollutant levels significantly.
- Humidity control: Anyone who has gone through a western Colorado summer knows that humidity levels drop like a stone in June, July and August. Adding a humidifier to the house is the smart solution. Higher humidity levels make breathing easier for the family and promote healthier sinuses. This lowers everyone’s chances of getting infections.
- Air filters: The air filters in your furnace and air conditioning units are an essential defense against particulates. Select filters with a MERV rating of 8 to 12. These filters allow plenty of air to go through while capturing the pollutants.
- Air cleaners: Air cleaners can be portable for cleaning a single area or installed in the HVAC system for whole-house coverage. Electronic air cleaners give particulates a charge, which forces them to drop into collector plates and out of your indoor air. UV lights, installed in your ductwork, destroy the DNA of organic contaminants.
These upgrades can improve the quality of your air and lessen the allergens your family has to deal with.
