What are Manuals J, S, T, and D? | ACCA HVAC Technical Manuals

HVAC manuals

No one ever said it was easy to choose an HVAC contractor, but you can certainly put the odds in your favor if you know what questions to ask. One way you can do that is to learn more about manuals J, S, T, and D created by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). Let’s see if Climate Control Company can help cut through the technical stuff in these HVAC manuals.

Manual J

This is used to calculate heating and cooling loads. What does that mean? It means the HVAC contractor must be able to use things like square footage, amount of insulation, ventilation, how many heat-producing appliances and people are in the structure. All of this data helps determine how much-conditioned air each room requires.

Manual S

When the load calculation is completed this is the manual that shows how to choose the right equipment for each job. The manual includes sizing requirements for multiple types of heating and cooling equipment. Using this manual allows the HVAC contractor to use the load calculations to choose the proper heat pump, air conditioner, furnace, or boiler.

Manual T

This HVAC manual is focused on air distribution. The first two calculations (Manual J & S) allow the contractor to determine the size and locations of things like registers, air diffusers, and return grilles. When done correctly this manual improves the airflow in your home.

Manual D

With the first three steps completed this is used to determine the proper size, design, and installation of the duct work. This is very important to prevent air leaks that waste energy. Poorly designed ductwork can quickly affect the comfort level and indoor air quality.
