Your Split Air Conditioning System: Why Only the Right Match Will Do

When you invest in a new split air conditioning system, you’re making an important investment of comfort for your Western Colorado home. As long as you pair the indoor and outdoor components properly, you can expect your air conditioner to last for years to come, providing unparalleled comfort and much lower energy bills.

How a split air conditioning system works

A split air conditioner has two primary components: an outdoor condensing unit and an indoor air handler/evaporator coil. Refrigerant flows through copper tubing between these two components, and a thermostat acts as the brain of the system, turning the A/C on when the temperature begins to rise.

When the system comes on, the refrigerant begins in the condensing unit and flows into the evaporator coil. Here, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air flowing over it, and a fan blows the resulting cooled air through your ducts and into your rooms.

The refrigerant carries the heat back to the condensing unit where it’s exhausted outside. The cycle continues until the thermostat senses that the target temperature has been reached.

Why only the right match will do

When you replace your outdated split air conditioning system, it may seem financially logical to only replace the condensing unit. After all, if this component has worn out before the evaporator coil, why not save when making a new investment?

Unfortunately, this decision doesn’t pan out. While the initial purchase price is lower, the benefits of only replacing the outdoor unit stop there. At best, a mismatched condensing unit and evaporator coil will perform at a lower efficiency than you expect. At worst, the incompatible components put undue stress on the system and lead to early failure, in the meantime increasing your energy bills and providing a less comfortable interior.

When you consider the initial purchase price of replacing an entire split air conditioning system versus replacing half the system now and everything again a brief time later, it’s clear which decision makes more financial sense.
