Programmable Thermostats Help You Save When You’re Away For The Holidays

Programmable thermostats are a great tool that can help you greatly reduce your home’s energy bills. They are perfect for daily use, and can help save money while you’re away for the holidays. Set your thermostat for savings today.
A programmable thermostat allows you to set programs around your household’s daily and weekly schedules. They’ll automatically turn down the heating when you leave for work, and then increase it to a comfortable level before you get home. They’ll do the same thing for when you’re sleeping, and most of them can be programmed so there’s a different schedule for the weekends.

You can also set a schedule for when you leave for holiday trips. Adjusting your thermostat is probably one of the last things on your mind when a big trip is coming up. Manually adjusting your thermostat before leaving on vacation is easy to overlook. If you know when you’ll be returning, you can prevent coming home to an icy house. Set the schedule to return to your normal temperature before you’re due to return.

Unfortunately, not all heating systems are ideal for use with a conventional programmable thermostat.

  • Standard programmable thermostats aren’t recommended for use for the warming function of heat pumps. When in heating mode, a setback in temperature can reduce the heat pump’s efficiency. You’ll use less energy just keeping your temperatures as a moderate level.
  • Electric resistance heating systems like baseboard heaters can’t function with a typical programmable thermostat. They require a thermostat that can control electrical circuits, and few programmable thermostats are available with these capabilities.
  • Radiant floor heating systems utilize a network of pipes under floors to provide heat. They take much longer to achieve temperature change than other options, eliminating the benefits of a programmable thermostat.
